Why is DotA so addictive?

Always another chance. All the creeps in the wave got denied? There's another coming in a few seconds. Missed a rune? There's another one coming in 2 minutes. Enemy cleared off your Neutral Creeps? They'll respawn and you can ward the area to gank the enemy. Died? You respawn and can go jump in the battle again. Lost the match? The next match starts from zero so that nobody has an advantage over you.

Frequent enough small gratifications to keep you interested. The sound of clinking gold on last hits are music to your ears. Launching searing arrows to harass your enemy puts an evil grin on your face. Even when the game is about to end, you can get kicks out of killing the enemy in their fountain - or hooking them into yours :).

Rare enough large gratification to make them coveted.  Getting a triple kill with Keeper's Illuminate is rare, hence cherished. Wiping out the entire team with Obsidian's Sanity's Eclipse is Epic !

Balance. You picked Morty? Void will Chrono you to the next dimension. Picked Void? Keeper's Blinding Light will make you useless. Chose Keeper? Morty will pack you off with one critical.

Easy to learn. You control only one unit.  Most of the heroes have only 3 active abilities. Farm, Buy items, Gank, Push. Destroy Base. Simple.

Difficult to Master. A one sec delay in stunning means Sand King's Ultimate will wipe out your team. You won't be able to farm enough to buy  Magina a butterfly every game. You can play well early game with Axe and lose. You can play well late game with Troll and lose. You want to Laguna Blade Abbadon right before his Borrowed Time activates, but he turns on Mask of Madness and throws off your estimation by 1 second and you end up increasing his HP by half for free.

Variety.  More than a 100 of Heroes. A similar number of Items. Rupture deals damage on the basis of how far your enemy has moved. And you can force him to move with a force staff. Skywraith's ulti is in a small area. But you can make the enemy to stay in it with the Rod of Atos's movement slow. Morty's huge critical damage can be countered with a blademail. She can fight back with a Black King Bar. And you can counter her 50% evasion with a Monkey King Bar.
Varying Gamplay styles. Abbadon can be played as a Support, Carry or Jungler or Tanker. Barathrum can initiate with a Charge or a Nether Strike.
Unexpected Turning points when you see a hitherto absent Naix emerging fully farmed from the jungle. Strategies ranging from "finish early" to "only pick AOE ". Tons of things to Experiment.

High.  Winning feels good. Successful Blind hooks or Imba arrows make you smile throughout the day. The sound of "Rampage" makes you feel like a demigod. Loosing makes you want to play again. Getting owned makes you pick your favorite hero next game.

Teamwork.  DotA gives expression to our primitive Hunting instincts. Plan, Ambush. Kill. Each hero has his role. You're part of a team that is supposed to annihilate the opposition. Sometimes you'll have to let the carry take the kill. Other times, you'll have to take the risk of initiating. And sometimes, you're just the bait.

Randomness. Void feels elated having Backtracked a Dagon, leaving Lion frustrated. Or Lycan runs away from your grip with only 3 HP and you can't believe your luck.

Freedom. You can chose to farm Neutral Creeps, farm Lanes, Gank, Support, Carry, Buy, Push, Roshan, Finish the game or enjoy seeing the enemy struggle to hold back mega creeps.

Beautiful characters, interesting lore and dialogues. Few game characters are as memorable as Pudge.
One of Terrorblade's lines are "You dare speak to me?"
Troll's story goes like this:
"When the Sentinel first gathered their forces, The Troll Warriors were considered primitive and unreliable. Their pride wounded, many refused to join, some even considering siding with the Scourge. Only a hotheaded young Warlord called Jah'rakal joined the Sentinel. Known as "Blinding Axe" in troll tongue, both for the blinding speed of his axes and his trademark blind technique, his unstoppable rampages have already made him a legend among his allies. However Jah'rakal fights not for the Sentinel, or even to defend the Ancients, but to show Elves, Men, Orcs and anyone else that trolls are the best fighters in the world."

The first part sounds reminds us of when we were kids. The second part is what every gamer aspires to be.

How do I stop getting addicted to Dota 2?

Getting out of a gaming addiction can be really hard. Its very underrated, people think it's just a video game, its nothing. But an addiction is an addiction. I played DOTA for 3 years during high school, and it got to a point that I was bunking classes almost everyday to sit in a café and play DOTA for 9-10 hours straight. I was on numerous Dota forums, all I thought about was how I could get better at Dota. My life was Dota. If you don't have a lot of willpower(like me)follow steps 1-4. If you're confident in yourself and can successfully reduce your gaming time, follow step 5.

From personal experience I can tell you that cutting down your time playing DOES NOT WORK. At least it didn't for me. It's much easier to stop completely. You need to make up your mind and JUST PUT AN END TO IT. Unless you plan on being a professional gamer.

1. If you're playing from home and you live with your parents, tell them about your fear of getting addicted and uninstall the game immediately. Don't think twice about it. Just make up your mind and do it. If you live alone, just do the latter(uninstall).

2. If you're a part of any forums or have friends that are into dota, you need to reduce/stop interacting with them as they are major factors that will make you want to play more and more.

3. If you go out to play in a café, calculate the total amount of money you have spent playing dota. Think about how you can spend this money somewhere else.

4. Join a gym. Start a sport. Get a hobby. These sound like everyday, normal, mundane things everyone talks about, but trust me, there's a reason everyone tells you to do them.

5. If you are absolutely sure you can restrict your gaming time, restrict it to no more than AN HOUR A DAY. Playing for longer will simply take away valuable time which can be used to do more productive things. In fact, playing computer games for a limited amount of time per day has even shown to improve cognitive functions like memory and concentration. You can do this by keeping a principle for yourself- that you only play once your work(college/school/office) is done. This will also ensure that you're not compromising on other, more important things.

Best of luck.
